The assignment consisted of creating a poster (in French) for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. The type of ballet and its theme was left to our choosing, which could have been either a real existing ballet or a fictional one. While keeping in mind that a ballet represents poise, grace, elegance and fluidity, it also represents strength, rigor, discipline and structure. My concept was to illustrate Giselle, the famous ballet about a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle’s great love frees him from their grasp.

To convey the despair felt by Giselle and portray the ethereal nymph that she becomes, I sketched her with white charcoal and laid her on a dark forest background. The cross symbol symbolizes the grave she was pulled from to become a Wilis herself.
